Ari Kettunen's Pioneer Reference Listening Loft

Some listening rooms you admire. Ari Kettunen's, you understand the moment you see it — an attic loft in Pietarsaari, Finland, sloped ceiling overhead, low sun coming through the window, feet up in wool socks and Defenders of the Faith on his lap. A wall of vinyl within arm's reach. Nothing here is arranged for visitors. It's arranged for exactly one person, exactly where he sits.
The heart of it is a full Pioneer Reference stack, from the years when Pioneer built flagships just to prove it could: a C-90a control amplifier feeding the M-90a power amp with its red meters glowing, an F-93 tuner, a PD-75 CD player — and the detail that makes tape people nod slowly: two Reference cassette decks, in daily service, in 2026. Below them in the cabinet, album art does duty as decoration, Slayer included. This room knows what it likes.
Vinyl gets two turntables. The first is a Yamaha GT-750 that Ari rebuilt himself, wearing a figured-wood plinth that looks poured rather than cut, a translucent green record on the platter. The second is a Pioneer PL-50LII. And then the speakers break the pattern in the best way: tall white DIY floorstanders, built by someone else around SB Acoustics drivers, carrying no famous badge at all. In a house this loyal to one brand, they're the exception that proves the rule — what matters here isn't the logo, it's whether it earns its place.
One system was never going to be enough. A second Reference stack sits in the corner by the listening chair, and downstairs in the living room lives the older Pioneer collection: an SA-9800 integrated amplifier, a TX-9500 tuner, an XL-1550 turntable and HPM-70 speakers, with a pair of vintage SE-L40 headphones resting in their original case on top. Pioneer didn't just win a room in this house. It won the house.
The wall tells you the rest about the man. Leaning there is a tribute board for a Rothmans Opel Manta 400 — a replica rally car Ari built himself in memory of Finnish hero Henri Toivonen. A man who rebuilds a rally car to honour a legend is the same man who rebuilds a GT-750 and keeps cassette alive. He doesn't collect gear. He keeps faith with things.
